Fences with gates are required around the pool area to keep it secure. Most properties will have their pools on a schedule and will want to close the pool areas off at certain times, for colder seasons, or for repair/maintenance. If there is a safety concern, such as inability to see the main drain on the bottom of the pool due to cloudy water, one should be able to secure the pool area until the problem is addressed.
Fences must be at least 48 inches high. Fence pickets must be spaced a certain distance apart from each other. In most cases no more than 4 inches apart. This includes all spaces such as between the bottom of the fence and the ground. This spacing requirement prevents children and animals from slipping through the fence into the pool area and reduces the risk of entrapment such as an arm being stuck between two pickets. Local requirements may vary.
